Pagan Nevada Guard Soldier Gets Waiver to Grow Beard; More May Follow

30 Dec 2019
Military.com | By Dorothy Mills-Gregg

A waiver allowed Sgt. 1st Class Benjamin Hopper of the Nevada Army Guard's 3665th Ordnance Company grow a Norse beard, or Skegg, which he sees as a "sacred and defining feature of masculine men."

"In short, it is honoring the pillars of Heathenism, our ancestors and ancient Gods and way of life," the 34-year-old from Madison, Alabama, said in a release. "My personal faith is deeply tied to the modern warrior lifestyle that I have been able to live during my military career."

His polytheistic religion is based on Scandinavian-centric ancient beliefs and practices.

In 2017, the Army made it simpler to receive a religious appearance accommodation, a move that made it easier for Sikhs and observers of other religions to uphold the tenets of their faiths while serving in uniform.

Now a member of the Norse pagan faith has been granted such accommodation by the 14th Military Police Brigade at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Commander Col. Curtis M. Shroeder signed a memorandum for a 795th Military Police Battalion soldier whose name is redacted in the version that is circulating on social media.

"In observance of your Heathen, Norse Pagan faith, you may wear a beard, in accordance with Army uniform and grooming standards for Soldiers with approved religious accomodations provided in Army regulation (AR) 670-1," the memo said.

You can count me in, LMAO

This is part of the evolution from “Be all you can be” to an “Army of one”.

When you make exceptions for one religion and then another you must extend the exception to all religions.

That's why it was a bad decision way back then.

But in the days we have now everyone gets a prize.

All I can say is that i am SUPREMELY RELIEVED that the Nevada Army Guard's 3665th Ordnance Company is so well protected by such a warrior. Heaven knows that Thor himself wouldn't challenged them now

Idiot.

I'm guessing that it's not a Chemical Ordnance Co. (Do they even have those anymore?)

The real question is that if having a beard is ok for some based solely on belief (aka personal preference) rather than on an actual safety issue, then why isn't ok for all?
