Torn Bicep
 

Torn bicep muscle. I recognize the injury is serious, looks like a camels two humper when flexing.I believe I ripped the tendon from the elbow as the bruising was along the downside of the forearm. My concern is surgery, I'm not a fan of anesthesiology, especially at my age. I think it impacts cognititive abilities in seniors.
Can the repair be done with local (Novocain) like product for pain reduction?

Modern anesthesiology is nothing like the old days. We're probably about the same age and I've had inguinal hernia surgery and intestinal blockage surgery in the last couple of years. Plus a dental implant. All were a piece of cake. My first hernia surgery, in '91, it was hell coming out of anesthesia. This time, I saw the O2 mask and the next instant saw the nurse. She gave me a short ginger ale and I was out the door.

Because of my age I did have to have a cardiologist sign off on it, though. No biggie.

I tore my right bicep two years ago. I don't think it was as serious as yours. It took about two months before I could swing a golf club. I did not have any surgery.

Was informed today that I am not a candidate for surgery, as I waited to long to address the issue. The Doctor explained that the surgery could be done, but it would need grafts and a long rehab, which he did not think was in my best interest. That was Rothman Institute. Setting up a second opinion to make certain, the first was solid.

Ask about a bier block.

We had an inmate that detached his bicep, and being socialist medicine, didn’t see an orthopod for several weeks. He finally had the surgery 6 + weeks, seemed to do fine.

Definitely get a second opinion. As popular as Rothman is, they will not take on cases where there’s a risk to their statistics. Meaning, they will not take a case that the patient doesn’t satisfy their publicized ratings. It matters to their investors and insurance. They declined my mother-in-law for a seemingly routine procedure, but because she had other health concerns they would not take her.

Look at a smaller, reputable practice. You’re also gonna see physicians are affiliated with numerous practices. Often, they’re linked through hospital affiliation and insurance companies.

Another thought is your body’s ability to regenerate muscle at your age. Not a knock, but my coworker had his bicep repaired when he was in he was thirty. Doc told him they wouldn’t do it if he was twice the age. That was a decade ago.

And anesthesia today is a breeze. Same as just posted, I remember the mask and then hearing the nurses talking. I wanted to tell them I wasn’t sedated. What I was was waking up after the procedure and in the recovery room. That was in November.

Ditto, except I don't even remember a mask. There was a happy shot first & they just balanced me where they needed. I was getting dozy and the next thing a small cranberry juice was proferred and "as soon as you get your feet your wife can take you home."

I have to ask: What was it you were doing at the time?

Now I'm sure there are many here, that can relate to this situation. The only time I see my age is in the mirror, in my my mind, you best never fuck with me, because I still think that 296 PFT score is still my standard.

I can and it sucks when my 300 PT son comes to visit and I can't bike or hike with him anymore because he won't slow down for dad. It's payback, though, he got that way because I wouldn't slow down for him when he was young. I would pat myself on the back, if I could. ;)

The COVID-19 Vaccine:Injection:
 

Received the Pfizer/BioNTech-CICID-19 vaccine @10:15 AM today at the VAMC . Huge turnout of veterans who are 75 yrs. or older or vets 65 + with underling medical conditions. The line was @ 90 minutes long after entering the facility, plenty of help & plenty of vaccine. The injection & post injection were nothing to speak of. In my case it was as unremarkable as a yearly flu shot. Scheduled for a 2nd injection on Feb. 13, 2021. This was the largest group of people I have ever seen at a VAMC for anything regarding medical care. It looked more like a crowd for a sporting event.
